The aim of the course is to broaden the general linguistic outlook of students, to promote the development of a scientific approach to the studied modern foreign language.

The course helps to solve the tasks:

- to form the volume of mastered grammatical phenomena characteristic for the sphere of everyday and professional communication;

- to form active and passive lexical vocabulary, including everyday and general terminological vocabulary of profile-oriented character;

- develop reading skills (all types);

- to form the skills of monological and dialogue speech;

- to form the skills of written speech, including elements of professionally oriented speech (CV writing), using adequate language means and correct application of the basic rules of spelling and punctuation of foreign written speech;

- to form cultural awareness of the socio-cultural portrait of the representatives of the countries of the studied language, socio-cultural norms of speech behaviour in a foreign language environment in the conditions of formal and informal communication;

- to form general cultural skills, in particular, to collect, systematise and process various types of linguistic, professional and cultural information, to interpret and use it in solving communicative, communicative-cognitive and cognitive-searching tasks;

- to teach the basics of the technology of linguistic and professional self-education, which implies learning to work with the main types of reference and reference literature (dictionaries, encyclopaedic reference books, reference books) and various information and reference literature (including Internet files and electronic reference literature);

- to form the skills of self-assessment of the level of linguistic, speech and socio-cultural competence, the skills of self-correction and the need for language self-education.
